Situated a convenient short few hours’ drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria, Safari Plains redefines luxury in the bush. Our resplendent tented suites are scattered along winding, sandy pathways, commanding privacy and natural elegance within the natural indigenous bushveld.

The wildlife experience starts by alighting into one of our spacious, open 4 x 4 game drive vehicles, which offer guests the opportunity to explore the 120 square kilometres Big Five private game reserve. Also available are a wide range of other, exciting activities, such as hot air ballooning, horseback trails quad bike adventures and guided bush walks.

Wining and dining at Safari Plains is a truly elegant affair; either in our sophisticated dining room or during a candle-lit bush dinner – complimented by colourful African entertainment.

These safari-style tents, each with private timber wrap-around decks, offer extraordinary comfort and stylish decor. Romantic outdoor seating provides the perfect way for guests to relax and enjoy the views from their private deck. Proudly family-friendly, both the family-style safari and luxury tents consist of a second bedroom with twin beds.

During your stay at Safari Plains, you can look forward to your taste buds being teased and tantalize by our unexcelled culinary delights, here cuisine is more than just a meal – it’s an indulgence where our unique seasonally inspired menus are hearty, scrumptious and deliciously different.

As we place such an emphasis on the individual needs of our guests each meal is carefully conceptualised taking into account the time of day, weather, dining setting and season. This personalised service covers a range of dietary requirements including vegetarian and halal. The staff’s emphasis is always on preparing dishes with the freshest ingredients and unique flavours brought together in a traditional South African way. The dishes range from South African braais (barbeques) by a roaring fire set under the stars to African mezze platters by the poolside and a la carte dinners in the restaurant.

EXPERIENCES & ACTIVITIES:

CLASSIC SAFARIS
The varied habitats on the Greater Mabula Game Reserve provide ideal conditions for an astounding selection of large mammals including the Big Five. Other wildlife includes the nocturnal brown hyena, jackal, cheetah and a variety of smaller, less often seen predators. Our savannah plains further sustain iconic species such as zebra, wildebeest, impala, red hartebeest, eland, gemsbok, warthog and giraffe. With the Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and whiny – more than 300 species of birds, 60 species of mammals, countless species of insects, reptiles and plants, the Greater Mabula Game Reserve offers an exciting destination for even the most decerned traveller.

GUIDED SAFARI WALKS
Come, join us on an exciting walk through the African bush on foot, departing from the Safari Plains Lodge to with your armed guide.

HORSEBACK SAFARIS
Going out on horseback safaris offers an entirely different perspective to classic wildlife viewing. Feel the freedom of being one with nature by riding through the bush and benefitting from the advanced height and mobility that comes from being mounted on horseback.

ECO-ADVENTURE TRAILS (QUAD BIKE SAFARIS)
Another unusual and adventurous way to explore the Greater Mabula Game Reserve is by quad bike.

We welcome guests to partake in our exciting quad bike trails. With the emphasis emphatically on safety, our qualified guides will ensure that participants are wearing the necessary safety gear before exploring the reserve. Safaris are undertaken on 250cc Suzuki quad bikes that can be operated in either manual or automatic gear.

• Departure Times Summer: 07h00, 10h00, 15h00 and 17h00
• Departure Times Winter: 08h00, 11h00, 14h00 and 16h00
• Frequency: 1.5 hours (1 hour on the trail, and a half an hour for induction), daily
• Age restrictions: Below 5 years not permitted

HOT AIR BALLOON SAFARIS
Guests wishing to participate in hot air ballooning are invited to meet the pilot and two members of the balloon crew at the lodge the evening prior to the flight, during which time they will be briefed about the following morning’s balloon safari.

The flight departs at 06h00 at a specific location on the reserve, depending on flight direction and meteorological conditions of the day, and will last approximately one hour. After your flight, you will be met by one of our guides, who will transfer you back to the lodge in time for breakfast.The Hot Air Balloon Safari is inclusive of your flight, complimentary Champagne which is served during the flight and a certificate for “bravery”.

We are able to offer a wide range of arrangements, which can be luxuriously glamorous or understated depending on your personal preference. The lodge may be exclusively booked for your wedding to ensure that our entire team can devote their time and location to create the most memorable and exciting experience for you and your guests on your special day. Facilities at the lodge can accommodate up to 60 guests. The actual ceremony can take place on our spectacular wooden deck at the main lodge, which offers magnificent vistas over the surrounding savannah plains, or weather permitting, in the untamed bush itself, followed by a luxurious reception in the lodge’s impressive dining room. If you are currently planning a conference, then the Safari Plains conference centre offers a unique opportunity to impress your conference attendees with a most adventurous setting that boasts all the facilities of an exclusive and memorable getaway. Our conference facility is perfect for groups of up to 60 delegates, with exclusivity, luxury and a natural setting as its most fundamental aspect.

Child Policy: Children under 6 years are only permitted on the family safaris at management discretion. One adult sharing with children, will pay the single adult rate.
