The Gems of Africa Safari & Tours Family took some time out to explore this Hidden Gem near Cape Town, the Spier Wine Farm.
Situated near Stellenbosch, Spier is one of South Africa’s oldest wine farms with a recorded winemaking history dating back to 1692. Inspired by creativity and craft – both old and new, Spier has meticulously restored the farm’s beautiful Cape Dutch buildings. Inside these as well as across our grounds and in the Spier Hotel, you’ll find artworks from the Spier Art Collection – one of the largest collections of contemporary works in the country.
Our farm offers plenty of tranquil spots for you to enjoy a picnic. Laze under the ancient oaks of our historic farmyard, the Werf, or head to the Riverside picnic area to relax on the grassy banks of the dam, surrounded by boulders and birdsong. We source as many ingredients as possible from our farm or trusted local producers. In addition to our standard seasonal picnic basket, we also offer vegan, vegetarian, and kids’ options. Blankets, cutlery and glassware are included with pre-booked baskets. Grab an ice bucket and select from our award-winning range of wines for the perfect picnic pairing.

SPIER WINES
Our terroir-driven wines come from a farm steeped in history, home to one of the oldest dated cellars in South Africa. With cellar master Johan Jordaan leading the team, our approach is based on regenerative farming, working with nature to make distinctive tastes out of every carefully picked vine row.
VADAS SMOKEHOUSE & BAKERY
Vadas believes in supporting local, quality-driven businesses (chicken, eggs and meats supplied by Spier’s Farmer Angus). Farm-to-plate dining embraces simple dishes and showcases the quality of produce. Although meat is what you would expect from a smokehouse – think smoked beef brisket, juicy smoked pork with a bourbon BBQ sauce or smoked pork belly with apple ketchup – there is a considered focus on ample, delicious vegetarian dishes.
SPIER ART
The Singing Stones of Spier – Artist Jenna Burchell has transformed twelve ancient rocks into interactive sound sculptures. She collected beautifully fractured rocks and repaired them following a method inspired by Kintsukuroi. This Japanese art involves repairing an object (normally pottery) with lacquer mixed with gold, silver or platinum dust. The result acknowledges both its brokenness and repair, celebrating this as a part of the object’s history, not as a flaw that should be concealed.
GROWING FOOD
In our food gardens, Megan McCarthy teaches members of disadvantaged local communities how to grow fruit, herbs and vegetables using eco-friendly and regenerative techniques. The bounty grown here is both sold & used in our restaurants. During the hard lockdown in 2020, the farm’s produce was donated to about 600 vulnerable families in nearby communities as part of relief packs. These packs were supplemented with seedlings and guidance on how to grow food. 11 families in Lynedoch have started food gardens to provide their families and community with nutritious food.
